## Group Calls for Nigerian Government to Address Unemployment Crisis
A leading NGO in Nigeria, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on unemployment in the country. During a news conference in Abuja, the Executive Director of CHRICED, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention in tackling the escalating unemployment crisis.
In a passionate plea, Zikirullahi advocated for an allocation of N1 billion for job creation in each of the 774 local government areas (LGAs) across Nigeria. He stressed the importance of tailoring the disbursement of these funds to align with the distinct characteristics of each local government area, thereby ensuring targeted and effective intervention.
Highlighting the severe impact of soaring living costs on millions of Nigerians, Zikirullahi underscored the pressing need for decisive measures to alleviate this dire situation. He articulated, “The challenge of the cost of living has continued to pose a significant existential threat to millions of Nigerians, hence the need to put measures in place to address it.”
Acknowledging certain commendable initiatives, such as the increment of workers’ wages by N35,000, conditional cash transfers to the most vulnerable segments of society, student loans, and the revitalization of the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, Zikirullahi emphasized the imperative nature of addressing the overarching issue of unemployment.
These impassioned appeals from CHRICED serve as a poignant reminder of the critical need for immediate and comprehensive action to combat the rampant unemployment crisis gripping Nigeria. As the nation grapples with this pressing issue, the imperative lies in swift and strategic interventions to uplift countless individuals burdened by the scourge of joblessness.
Through the unwavering advocacy of organizations like CHRICED and the concerted efforts of governmental authorities, there remains a glimmer of hope for a future where gainful employment is within reach for all Nigerians. In the pursuit of a nation brimming with opportunities, the clarion call to address the unemployment crisis echoes resoundingly, beckoning forth transformative measures and resolute commitment from all stakeholders.
