Seychelles is taking an ambitious leap by incorporating climate change considerations into its government, business, and strategic planning. The Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change, and Environment, Flavien Joubert, emphasized the country’s commitment to this progressive move following its participation in the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) in Dubai from December 1 to 12.
Joubert stressed the urgency of addressing climate change despite the lack of unequivocal language at the conference’s conclusion. He articulated Seychelles’ determination to persevere in various alliances and exert relentless efforts to advance the climate change agenda.
At COP28, Seychelles sent a robust 80-member delegation to gain firsthand experience and engage in productive networking sessions. Joubert underscored that local stakeholders leveraged this platform to explore collaborative approaches for contributing to the global climate change strategy.
A noteworthy concern highlighted by Joubert was the excessive energy consumption prevalent in Seychelles’ infrastructure, particularly in its buildings. The Minister for Lands and Housing, Billy Rangasamy, and his team actively pursued discussions aimed at curbing energy usage, especially in air conditioning, whilst exploring sustainable energy vehicle alternatives.
Promoting the transition to electric vehicles emerged as a focal point during the conference. Joubert advocated for a shift towards electric cars, emphasizing the nation’s ongoing electric mobility project initiated in November 2022. This initiative, supported by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme, will introduce full electric buses, marking a significant milestone in reducing Seychelles’ reliance on fuel.
Amidst these developments, Seychelles has made substantial strides in mitigating coastal erosion attributed to climate change. The nation’s unwavering commitment to addressing climate-related challenges has been echoed through its active involvement in various small island developing states groupings, amplifying its collective voice on international platforms.
