Nigeria is taking a significant step forward in its energy transition journey with the deployment of cutting-edge gas leak protection technology. The Amal gas leak detection device is poised to fuel the country’s increased adoption of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a preferred energy source for homes, transportation, and industry.

During the Commissioning of Amal Technologies Gas Leak Detection and Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing Facility in Idu, Abuja, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to natural gas as a transition fuel. He highlighted the pivotal role of the gas leak detection facility in advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at deepening gas penetration and industrialization through the widespread use of liquid petroleum gas and the adoption of CNG.

Senator Lokpobiri also underscored the government’s proactive initiatives, including the establishment of fuel-to-gas conversion centers and CNG refuel stations across the nation, in alignment with a net-zero target by 2060, as committed at COP26 in August 2022. The deployment of the flagship Amal gas leak detection device is expected to enhance safety measures, further propelling the adoption of gas as a prominent energy source in various sectors.

Felix Ogbe, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), emphasized the transformative potential of the technology in mitigating the recurring threat of gas explosions, which have resulted in tragic loss of lives, property damage, and environmental pollution. He also highlighted the anticipated job creation in the sector, underlining the broader socio-economic impact of the innovative gas leak protection technology.

In recent years, Nigeria has experienced several gas explosions, including incidents in Lagos, Kano, and other regions, resulting in significant human casualties and extensive property destruction. The introduction of the Amal gas leak detection technology signals a promising shift towards enhanced safety measures and sustainable energy practices, underscoring Nigeria’s dedication to achieving a safer, cleaner, and more efficient energy landscape.
