Benue State’s members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly have made an urgent plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging his intervention in the state’s ongoing crisis. During a press briefing at the National Assembly, the lawmakers accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of being dictatorial and disregarding the National Assembly members. Led by Senator Titus Zam, the legislators expressed their concerns, highlighting the need for immediate intervention to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

Senator Zam and other members of the House of Representatives emphasized the governor’s failure to engage with the National Assembly members since the election. They also highlighted the governor’s alleged lack of response to their calls and criticized the perceived lopsidedness in his political appointments.

The lawmakers raised concerns about the governor’s approach to appointing commissioners, citing a disregard for traditional practices such as requesting nominations from local governments and overlooking zoning arrangements. They accused Governor Alia of making independent choices without considering established protocols.

Furthermore, the legislators disputed the governor’s purported popularity, asserting that he faced significant opposition within the party. Senator Zam emphasized the perceived lack of support for Governor Alia’s candidature among older party members, emphasizing a sense of rejection within the party ranks.

The appeal for intervention from President Tinubu and other APC leaders in Nigeria underscores the urgency of the situation, signaling a potential threat to the fortunes of the APC in Benue State. The lawmakers’ collective call for intervention highlights the complex interplay of power dynamics within the state’s political landscape, raising crucial questions about governance, representation, and internal party dynamics.
