NCC to unveil strategic plan for telecom sector in January

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking strategic plan that is set to revolutionize the country’s telecommunications sector. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, revealed that this pivotal plan will be unveiled at the end of January 2024. This announcement came during a courtesy visit by executives of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA), Abuja chapter.

During the meeting, Mr. Maida emphasized that the strategic plan aims to enhance the quality of services provided by telecommunication companies and address the Right of Way (RoW) challenges faced by operators in the sector. In addition, he highlighted the importance of the Subscribers Identification Modules (SIM) linkage to the National Identity Number Policy, emphasizing that it will play a significant role in improving and securing digital services within the country’s telecoms industry.

Mr. Maida stressed the need for collaboration with the media in order to facilitate the seamless development of the telecom sector, acknowledging the vital role of effective communication in conveying their objectives to both local and international audiences. He expressed gratitude to the President and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy for entrusting him with the responsibility of advancing the sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Strategic Roadmap outlined by the Minister.

Furthermore, Mr. Maida highlighted the importance of reshaping the narrative surrounding RoW and building upon the foundation laid by his predecessors. He emphasized the significance of establishing a unified identity system, citing examples from other sectors such as banking, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Unifying these identities under the National Identification Number (NIN) framework will not only facilitate the development of various digital services but also bolster security measures within the country.

In response, Blessing Olaifa, President of NITRA Abuja chapter, lauded the NCC for its proactive stance upon the assumption of Dr. Maida’s office. Olaifa expressed confidence in Dr. Maida’s capacity and competence to drive the NCC to greater heights and build upon the accomplishments of his predecessor.

This latest development from the NCC promises to chart a new course for Nigeria’s telecoms industry, setting the stage for significant advancements and improved services that will benefit both operators and consumers.
