In an effort to tackle the surge in violent crimes, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, the Nigerian government is shifting its focus towards promoting patriotism and nationalism. According to Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, instilling a sense of patriotism among citizens and cultivating a strong national identity is a vital strategy in the fight against these crimes.

During a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, engaged in discussions with Minister Idris, emphasizing the importance of unity and a shared national identity as a powerful force against violent crimes. Minister Idris stressed the need to reassert and reclaim the core values of nationalism and patriotism that have been gradually eroded over time. He highlighted the imperative of reflecting on past missteps in order to set a new course for the future.

Acknowledging the indispensable role of collaboration in combating insurgency and fostering unity and peace, Minister Idris underscored the pivotal involvement of the Nigerian media and the populace in the fight against violent crimes. Emphasizing the critical role of the media and citizens, he suggested that a united front is essential for the successful prosecution of the war against insurgency.

General Musa echoed the sentiment of collaboration, noting that the visit to the minister was part of a broader initiative to build synergy between the military and the media. He emphasized the significance of aligning non-kinetic operations to foster a stronger partnership between the Armed Forces and the public, with a particular focus on the origins of information.

The government’s strategic pivot towards promoting patriotism as a means to combat terrorism and banditry reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the underlying conditions fueling these crimes. By prioritizing national unity and identity, the Nigerian government seeks to rally its citizens and the media in a concerted effort to counter the growing threats of violent crimes.
