The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed its plan to hold re-runs and by-elections concurrently in nine states of Nigeria on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

According to Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, the decision comes in the wake of vacancies declared by the presiding officers of the National Assembly, as well as state houses of assembly.

Olumekun explained that the vacancies encompass two senatorial districts, four federal constituencies, and three state constituencies, spanning nine states of the federation. Moreover, the commission will conduct re-run elections as directed by various election petition appeal tribunals, affecting a total of 35 constituencies.

He emphasized that the timetable for these elections, along with comprehensive delimitation data, has been made available on the commission’s website and social media platforms to guide political parties, candidates, and the public.

INEC urged political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the specified timelines to ensure the smooth and efficient conduct of these elections.

The simultaneous re-runs and by-elections mark a significant step in Nigeria’s electoral process, and as the nation gears up for these crucial events, all eyes will be on the outcome and its implications for the political landscape.
