Key leaders from the South East states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo are set to gather in Umuahia on Friday, December 29 for the launch of the ‘Peace in South East Project’. This pivotal event will see the convergence of traditional rulers, opinion leaders, business leaders, and prominent figures from diverse political affiliations.

At a recent press briefing in Abuja, Mrs. Mary Ikoku, Chairperson of the Media and Communication Committee of the project, unveiled details of the initiative. The event will also coincide with the homecoming reception for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.

The project organizers, in collaboration with the people of Bende Local Government Area of Abia, aim to acknowledge and honor Kalu’s unwavering commitment to public service and his remarkable contributions to the South East region and the nation as a whole.

Emphasizing the non-kinetic approach adopted by the peace initiative, Ikoku urged the Nigerian military to consider adjusting its current strategy by fostering trust and cooperation through dialogue with the local population. She expressed the desire for a shift from purely militaristic methods to embracing negotiation and engagement as a means to address security challenges.

The Head of Programmes, Mr. Ogbonna Ukuku, commended the House of Representatives for passing the bill on the establishment of the South-East Development Commission. He highlighted the potential of this development in fostering peace and stability in the region.

The upcoming gathering is poised to serve as a significant milestone, marking the formal declaration of peace in the South East. With participants drawn from across the country, the event is expected to address critical areas such as agriculture, education, leadership, sports, entertainment, culture, and tourism, signifying a comprehensive approach towards sustainable peace and development in the region.
