The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has expressed strong condemnation for the recent killing of two elephant calves in the Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State. In a statement released by the association’s President, Dr. Moses Arokoyo, the NVMA also lamented the tragic deaths of two booted eagles that had migrated from Europe but met their demise in Kebbi and Sokoto states.
Dr. Arokoyo emphasized the sheer senselessness of the brutal act, labeling it as a premeditated and willful termination of innocent lives and a blatant violation of the animals’ right to exist. The NVMA adamantly opposes such inhumane treatment and sees it as a responsibility of veterinarians to safeguard the lives of all creatures.
The statement further highlighted the distressing lack of awareness and sensitivity regarding the importance of wildlife conservation and the utilization of non-lethal methods to ensure the safety of endangered species. Additionally, the NVMA revealed its engagement with the Nigerian National Park Service and its commitment to collaborating with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to address and resolve this escalating issue of animal brutality.
The NVMA’s determined stand against these acts of cruelty underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to preserve and protect wildlife. As the global community grapples with environmental challenges, the NVMA’s unequivocal denouncement serves as a testament to the collective responsibility of humanity in nurturing and safeguarding the natural world.
