Nigerian Army’s relentless efforts in combatting violent extremism and insurgency in Niger and Kaduna States have yielded significant results, with 14 insurgents neutralized and 13 kidnapped victims rescued. The impactful operations, carried out by the 1 Division Nigerian Army, showcased the bravery and dedication of the troops in securing the region.
Lt.-Col. Musa Yahaya, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Relations at 1 Division Nigerian Army, reported that the coordinated offensives in Kaduna and Niger States resulted in clearing insurgents and violent extremists from several hideouts. The troops’ gallant efforts led to the neutralization of numerous insurgents, making substantial recoveries that have dealt a significant blow to the activities of criminal elements in the area.
In a daring mission carried out on December 23, the troops engaged and neutralized two insurgents in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, with others fleeing with gunshot wounds. The successful operation resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, two AK-47 magazines, and the rescue of 13 male kidnap victims who had been held captive since October 13, 2023.
Furthermore, the troops discovered an insurgents’ camp and eliminated the leader, Ali Kachalla, forcing his followers to flee. The subsequent search of the camp led to the recovery of valuable items, including an international passport suspected to belong to a high-profile affiliate of the insurgents, along with military and warlike accessories. The rescued individuals were provided with medical attention at a military facility and reunited with their families.
Moving to Kaduna State, the troops’ unwavering commitment to eradicating insurgency led to the neutralization of three insurgents in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, with the recovery of weapons and motorcycles. Additionally, the destruction of insurgents’ camps and the successful rescue of a kidnapped victim in separate operations have significantly undermined the nefarious activities of the criminal elements in the region.
Maj.-Gen. Valentine Okoro, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and Force Commander Operation WHIRL Media Talk Africa, commended the troops for their remarkable successes and urged them to sustain the offensive against insurgents and criminal elements in the area.
