In an effort to provide support to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Cross River State, the Federal Government has announced plans to construct additional housing in the Ogoja and Obanliku LGAs. Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, revealed this development during the launch of the Cross River iteration of the Grants for Vulnerable Groups program, where she was joined by Governor Bassey Otu.
Dr. Edu expressed her deep concern after witnessing the plight of residents from the Belegete and Okwa communities, who were forced to flee attacks by insurgents allegedly originating from neighboring Cameroon. Acknowledging the influx of refugees from Cameroon and internally displaced persons from the affected communities, she emphasized the government’s commitment to building more accommodation facilities to address the pressing housing needs.
Highlighting the government’s proactive stance, Dr. Edu announced the upcoming launch of additional poverty alleviation projects by January 2024. She underscored President Bola Tinubu’s ambition to uplift 50 million vulnerable Nigerians out of poverty through his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Otu lauded President Tinubu’s administration, commending its compassionate approach and dedication to making a tangible difference in the lives of the people. He praised the government’s inclusivity and its concerted efforts to provide a sense of belonging to vulnerable segments of the population.
The innovative housing project and poverty alleviation initiatives underscore the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges faced by refugees and IDPs, reflecting a broader vision to enhance social welfare and support vulnerable communities across the nation.
