The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has unveiled that over 50,000 soldiers are currently engaged in critical peacekeeping missions across Nigeria. In a special event honoring frontline troops of the 6 Division, Nigeria Army, Lagbaja conveyed the soldiers’ significant role in counter-terrorism endeavors in the North East, efforts to address separatist activities in the South East, and the battle against oil theft in the South South.

Speaking through Maj.-Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Nigeria Army, Lagbaja expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by the troops, emphasizing that their dedication has allowed fellow citizens to live in peace. He acknowledged that thousands of soldiers would be away from their families during the festive season as they fulfill their duties in challenging terrains across the nation.

Lagbaja also shared positive expectations for the year ahead, highlighting the Federal Government’s forthcoming initiatives designed to enhance the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army and improve national security. He underscored the anticipated acquisition of helicopters and other vital resources that will contribute to a safer environment for all citizens.

Highlighting the welfare of the soldiers as a top priority, Lagbaja emphasized ongoing and future projects aimed at directly impacting the lives of military personnel and their families. Stressing the importance of troops’ wellbeing, he assured continuous efforts to furnish them with the necessary support to effectively execute their duties.

To ensure the safe return of soldiers to their families, Lagbaja outlined plans to collaborate with other security agencies to gradually transition their responsibilities, allowing for a reduction in troop strength engaged in internal security operations. He articulated the army’s commitment to empower statutory security agencies to effectively uphold internal security, ultimately redirecting focus towards fortifying the nation’s territorial integrity.

Maj.-Gen. Jamaal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigeria Army, lauded the sacrifices of the troops, specifically recognizing their contributions to curbing illegal oil bunkering activities in the Niger Delta which have led to an upsurge in oil production. He reaffirmed the division’s dedication to supporting the Federal Government in achieving targeted oil output for the year ahead, all while adhering to global best practices and respecting human rights.

During the event, concerns were raised over the loss of soldiers in the line of duty, with a commitment made to bring the perpetrators of the recent ambush to justice. The deputy governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, represented Governor Siminalayi Fubara and expressed the state government’s unwavering support for security agencies.

As Nigeria navigates complex security challenges, the unwavering dedication of the military and collaborative efforts with state and federal authorities remain instrumental in shaping a safer and more secure future for the nation.
