Omonia Nicosia’s Request to Stall Uzoho’s AFCON Duty Sparks Tension

Omonia Nicosia, a Cypriot club, finds itself in the midst of a potential standoff as they aim to postpone the departure of Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Uzoho is poised to join the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming tournament. The standard protocol dictates that clubs must release called-up players by January 1st. Consequently, Uzoho is anticipated to rendezvous with his Super Eagles compatriots in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on the same day.

Reports from Cypriot news outlet, Kerkida, indicate that Omonia Nicosia is grappling with a crisis in the goalkeeping department. The club is keen for Uzoho to safeguard their goalpost in the face-off against AEL on January 2nd. This urgency stems from the unavailability of their primary goalkeeper, Fabiano, who is convalescing from an injury and is not expected to return to action until the culmination of January. Adding to their plight, the club’s alternate goalkeeper, Charalampos Kyriakidis, is also sidelined due to an injury.

This predicament has sparked a contentious predicament, as Omonia Nicosia’s plea to prolong Uzoho’s availability clashes with the national team’s imperative need for all summoned players to promptly assemble for preparatory activities ahead of the AFCON. The club’s request has cast a shadow of uncertainty and raised eyebrows within football circles, stirring speculation about potential repercussions and the looming tug-of-war over player obligations.
