Maiduguri residents are buzzing with excitement as the city embraces the game-changing introduction of electric taxis. Residents are applauding this innovative initiative and are now advocating for the inclusion of female drivers in this new wave of transportation.
In a move to alleviate transportation costs, the Borno Government recently acquired and rolled out 50 electric cars and 57 mass transit buses. The grand inauguration of these vehicles took place on Dec. 11, in Maiduguri, officiated by President Bola Tinubu.
Compared to the government-subsidized buses charging N50 per person, the electric taxis operate at a fare of N100 per passenger. The convenience and affordability of the electric vehicles have left commuters exhilarated and have undeniably enhanced the city’s transportation system.
A satisfied resident, Amina Audu, expressed her delight with the electric taxis, indicating the need for an increased fleet, alongside a plea for the recruitment of female drivers to operate some of the elegant cars.
Amina remarked, “Many of us (women) are excited with the taxis to the extent of taking selfies while taking a ride, we wish for more of them and the need to have female drivers for some of the beautiful cars.”
Another passenger, Ibrahim Khalifa, praised the convenience and cost-effectiveness of the electric vehicles, highlighting that they comfortably accommodate four passengers; one in the front and three at the back, charging N100 per passenger. He also observed that in urgent situations, individuals are willing to pay N400 or N500 for a quick journey to their destinations.
Khalifa advised the Borno Express Corporation, the entity managing the electric vehicles, to prioritize the proper maintenance of the vehicles to ensure their longevity and optimal performance.
In an interview, electric car driver Ibrahim Grema disclosed that the vehicle’s battery takes approximately one and a half hours to achieve a full charge, allowing for 12 hours of continuous usage. Grema shared his positive experience, citing favorable patronage and impressive car performance. He further mentioned that oftentimes, he concludes his workday with 40% battery charge remaining.
Furthermore, fellow drivers Umar Mohammad and Mohammed Kachalla urged the Borno Express Corporation to expand the charging infrastructure by installing more charging points, as the current provision of only two charging points may prove insufficient to cater to the growing fleet of electric vehicles.
The embrace of electric taxis in Maiduguri marks an extraordinary leap in redefining urban transportation, captivating the populace and igniting the call for gender inclusivity among the cadre of drivers. As the city revels in this technological advancement, the resounding cry for female representation wheels towards a more inclusive and forward-thinking era.
