The Imo State government is set to reinstate Christian Obi as the head coach of Heartland, a Nigeria Premier Football League team. This decision comes after Obi was removed from his position due to the team’s disappointing performance in the 2023/24 NPFL season. With the Naze Millionaires struggling and failing to secure a victory in nine league games under Obi’s management, the officials are looking to reverse the team’s fortunes.
Reports from Owerri indicate that the decision to bring back Obi was made during a meeting with the state’s sports commissioner, Hon Emeka Okoronkwo, and other government officials. Following Obi’s departure, Kennedy Boboye, former coach of Plateau United and Akwa United, took over as the team’s coach. Under Boboye’s guidance, the Owerri club managed to secure two wins, one draw, and three defeats in six games.
Despite the coaching change, Heartland finds themselves in a precarious position at the bottom of the NPFL table. They are gearing up to face Remo Stars at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, hoping to turn their fortunes around and improve their standing in the league. This reinstatement underscores the state government’s determination to revitalize the team and reclaim their standing as a top contender in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
