In an effort to combat the rising threat of banditry, Zamfara State Government has taken decisive action by closing eleven cattle markets until further notice. The move comes as a response to security reports indicating that these markets have been exploited by bandits as a platform for selling stolen cattle.
Munnir Haidara, the State Commissioner of Information, revealed that the decision was made based on compelling security intelligence linking the affected markets to the illegal trade of rustled cows. The shut-down markets include Tsafe and Bilbis markets in Tsafe Local Government Area, Jangebe market in Talata-Mafara LGA, Wuya market in Anka area, Magazine Diddi market in Maradun LGA, Galadi market in Shinkafi LGA, Mada market in Gusau LGA, and Sabon Birnin Danali in Birnin Magaji LGA. The remaining closed markets are Kokiya, Chigama, and Nasarawar Godel markets, all situated in Birnin Magaji LGA.
According to Haidara, the state government deemed it necessary to take this action in light of the complicity of some individuals in facilitating the illicit trade of stolen cattle within these markets. Furthermore, the government has mandated security forces to ensure strict enforcement of the closure, with instructions to apprehend any individual found contravening the directive. “The security personnel have since been directed to arrest any person found in these affected markets,” added Haidara.
The state government has issued a call to the citizens of Zamfara to adhere to the closure order and collaborate with the authorities in their concerted drive to eliminate banditry from the state.
This bold move reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of its people. It serves as a reminder of the proactive measures essential in combatting the insidious activities of criminal elements, not only in Zamfara but also in regions facing similar challenges.
