Remo Stars Lead NPFL Standings Despite Heartland Defeat

Remo Stars closed out 2023 at the pinnacle of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table, maintaining their position despite a 3-1 loss to Heartland in Owerri on Thursday. Promise Anyanwu opened the scoring for Heartland in the 50th minute, but Remo Stars’ Sikiru Alimi managed to equalize 19 minutes later. However, the hosts secured victory with two late goals from Onyekachi Okafor and Chinedu Ike. Remo Stars currently lead the standings with 29 points from 16 games.

In other NPFL action, Lobi Stars climbed to second place after securing a 1-0 victory against Niger Tonardoes, with Kumaga Suur scoring the crucial goal 15 minutes from time.

Meanwhile, league title holders Enyimba clinched the only away win of the day, triumphing over Bayelsa United 2-1 in Yenagoa. Enyimba took the lead through Ekenne Awazie in the 65th minute, but the home team fought back, with Israel Consul netting the equalizer seven minutes later. The match was ultimately decided by a winning goal from Chijioke Mbaoma, converting from the spot nine minutes from time.
