Nigeria’s TCN Unveils 7 New Power Transformers to Enhance Electricity Supply in Lagos

In a bid to address the persistent power supply challenges in Nigeria, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken a significant step by acquiring seven new power transformers. The move is poised to bolster the electricity delivery capacity, particularly in Lagos, the country’s economic hub.

According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the newly acquired power transformers, with capacities ranging from 60MVA to 100MVA, mark a pivotal addition to the existing infrastructure. These transformers, an integral part of the TCN/World Bank power projects, are slated for deployment to several key transmission substations.

The Akangba 330/132kV transmission substation will serve as the focal point for the distribution of the new transformers. Upon arrival, the transformers will be allocated to the Alausa 132/33kV Transmission Substation, Akoka 132/33kV Transmission Substation, Maryland 132/33kV Transmission Substation, Itire 132/33kV Transmission Substation, and Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation.

Furthermore, the TCN disclosed that the Akoko 132/33kV substation and Amuwo 132/33kV substation are slated to receive two transformers each, while the others will receive one transformer each. This strategic allocation is anticipated to significantly augment the company’s transmission capacity, thereby addressing the prevailing electricity supply constraints.

Notably, Nigeria has long grappled with a substantial deficit in power supply, with a meager average supply of 4,000MW for a population of over 200 million. Furthermore, recent government estimates reveal that Nigerians generate approximately 40,000MW through self-help initiatives daily to meet their domestic and commercial electricity needs.

The TCN’s acquisition of the new power transformers represents a pivotal stride towards ameliorating the longstanding power supply inadequacies, especially in Lagos. This development underscores a concerted effort to fortify the nation’s power infrastructure, with a keen focus on fostering sustainable economic growth and improving the welfare of its populace.
