Brentford’s Onyeka Gets Full Support from Coach Frank for 2023 AFCON Participation

Brentford’s midfielder, Frank Onyeka, has disclosed that his head coach, Thomas Frank, is fully supportive of his participation in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Onyeka is expected to be a vital inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the tournament, with memories of their previous knockout haunting him.

Amidst widespread criticism from European managers over the mid-season scheduling of the AFCON, Onyeka expressed his gratitude for the encouragement and reassurance he has received from Coach Frank. In an interview with the BBC World Service, Onyeka stated, “He’s happy for me to represent my country on this big stage. I’m really happy that he’s also my supportive coach, letting his players go off to AFCON.”

The 25-year-old Nigerian international acknowledged the challenges of reintegrating into the team post-tournament, emphasizing the mental strength required for this transition. “When you get back, the team is settled, they’re playing well. Getting into the team again takes a long time,” Onyeka explained, shedding light on the struggles faced by players returning from international duty.

Onyeka’s experience offers a glimpse into the complexities faced by footballers balancing club commitments with national team duties, shedding light on the emotional and practical hurdles they encounter.
