Speaker Abbas Tajudeen praised the performance of the 10th House of Representatives in the first six months since its inception on June 13, 2003. During a vacation session on Saturday, he commended the House for its significant contributions to Nigeria.
According to Abbas, the House considered a total of 962 bills, 500 motions, and 153 petitions. Notably, 120 bills have successfully passed the second reading stage, with ongoing refinement to address concerns raised during the debates. Additionally, 120 bills have been referred to committees for further analysis, and several others have been transmitted to the Senate for concurrence.
Some of the significant bills include amendments to the Electricity Act, Federal Audit Service Act, 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act, and the Oath Act. Furthermore, critical bills such as the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill, Federal Fire and Rescue Service Bill, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act have been passed, signifying the House’s commitment to addressing societal challenges.
Notably, the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2023 was assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on 23rd November, 2023. This modern legislation empowers the Defence Corporation to manufacture, store, and dispose of ordinance, replacing the outdated 1964 legislation.
Overall, the House aims to empower citizens, promote social justice, foster economic growth, and enhance peace and security through these bills.
