As hopes rise for an improvement in Nigeria’s economy in 2024, stakeholders are urging the government to prioritize policies that will alleviate the hardships faced by citizens due to the economic challenges of the previous year. The removal of fuel subsidies and other policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration led to widespread poverty and frustration across the nation in 2023.

In an exclusive interview with Media Talk Africa, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, the National President of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), and Goodluck Ibem, the President General of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), highlighted crucial areas that require immediate attention from the government.

Shettima stressed the need for the government to improve economic policies in 2024 by diversifying the economy, attracting foreign investments, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. He emphasized the importance of addressing the adverse effects of inflation, rising unemployment rates, and a struggling economy, as well as prioritizing job creation and stability.

In addition to economic reforms, Shettima called for urgent measures to tackle the escalating security crisis in the country. He emphasized the modernization of security forces, intelligence gathering, and improving border control to effectively combat criminal activities, including kidnappings, armed robberies, and insurgency. Shettima also underscored the significance of addressing the root causes of insecurity such as poverty, unemployment, and social inequality.

Furthermore, Shettima highlighted the inadequate state of infrastructure in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for significant investments in road networks, power plants, and healthcare facilities to enhance the nation’s progress and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

On the other hand, Ibem emphasized the need to repair the dilapidated refineries in Nigeria, ensuring the country’s self-sufficiency in fuel production. He also called for the revitalization of moribund industries to provide employment for the nation’s youths and address the high unemployment levels, which contribute to insecurity.

Ibem urged President Tinubu to take decisive actions to address the soaring costs of living, transportation, and basic food items, emphasizing the impact of these challenges on the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians. He also stressed the urgency of addressing the rampant killings by terrorists, particularly citing the recent gruesome killings in Plateau state as a concerning example.

In response to these pressing issues, President Tinubu acknowledged the frustrations and discomfort experienced by Nigerians due to the government’s policies and assured the nation of his commitment to resolving these challenges. He acknowledged the rising cost of living, high inflation, and under-employment rates, affirming his awareness of the citizens’ grievances and expressing his determination to renew hope and improve the nation’s current state.

As Nigeria enters 2024 with high expectations for economic recovery and social progress, the call for decisive actions from President Tinubu’s administration remains a focal point. The youth leaders’ agenda underscores the urgency of addressing economic, security, and social challenges to pave the way for a brighter future for all Nigerians.
