The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to assertively implement electoral laws and constitutional provisions in upcoming elections. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, SDP National Chairman Shehu Gabam emphasized the need for INEC to make bold adjustments and address past mistakes in preparation for the 2024 elections.
Gabam highlighted the importance of INEC’s ability to prosecute electoral offenders and emphasized the necessity of canceling elections in cases of compromise. Specifically referencing the 2019 election in Kogi, Gabam underscored the significance of INEC taking decisive action when faced with evidence of electoral malpractice. He expressed disappointment with INEC’s failure to cancel the election in certain areas despite acknowledging pre-filling of election result sheets and leakage of sensitive materials.
Calling for bold rectification of past errors, Gabam urged INEC to demonstrate its commitment to prosecuting electoral offenders. He cautioned that failure to do so could lead to unprecedented voter apathy and emphasized the importance of INEC exercising its power to cancel elections where compromise is evident, in accordance with the law.
In addition to advocating for stricter enforcement of electoral laws, Gabam stressed the need for a broader societal reorientation. He emphasized the essential role of reeducating Nigerians on their rights and privileges, especially regarding the constitutional right to vote and have their votes accurately counted. Gabam believes that such reorientation is vital in empowering citizens to resist any attempts to undermine their voting rights.
Furthermore, he addressed the issue of boycotting elections, asserting that avoidance is not a viable solution within a democratic system. Gabam urged Nigerians to shift their attitude towards elections and emphasized the necessity of active participation to uphold democratic principles.
The SDP’s call for vigorous enforcement of electoral laws and constitutional provisions by INEC underscores the critical importance of upholding the integrity of democratic processes and ensuring that the will of the people is accurately reflected in election outcomes.
