Nasarawa State Plans Local Government Elections on Aug 31

Nasarawa State Government has set the date of August 31 for the elections of chairmen and councillors across its 13 local government councils. The announcement was made by Mr. Ayuba Wandai, the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), during a stakeholders’ meeting with officials of the state Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lafia.

According to Wandai, the current chairmen and councilors were elected on October 6, 2021, and inaugurated on October 8, 2021, for a three-year tenure which is set to end on October 7. He emphasized that the law mandates the commission to commence preparations for the election one year before the expiration of the officials’ tenure. Wandai reassured stakeholders that the commission is committed to upholding the laws governing the conduct of local government elections in the state.

This move signifies the state government’s dedication to democratic processes and ensuring that local governance is in line with constitutional mandates. The upcoming elections are poised to shape the trajectory of grassroots politics and governance in Nasarawa, bearing significant implications for the state’s overall political landscape.
