The Deputy Spokesperson of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Philip Agbese, has emphatically rejected allegations of the Nigerian Navy’s involvement in crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region. Instead, he urged commendation for the Navy’s crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and combating illegal activities, including piracy, smuggling, and oil bunkering.
In a press briefing in Abuja, Chief Agbese dismissed recent reports implicating the Navy in crude oil theft as baseless, aimed at tarnishing the Navy’s image and reputation. He emphasized that there is no evidence to support these claims, attributing them to non-state actors with vested interests in undermining legitimate government agencies in the oil exploration areas.
“The Nigerian Navy is a professional and patriotic institution, diligently executing its constitutional duties with integrity. It has been at the forefront of the fight against crude oil theft and maritime crimes, collaborating with other security agencies and stakeholders to protect our national assets and interests,” stated Chief Agbese.
Expressing disappointment at the unfounded accusations against the Navy, Chief Agbese emphasized the need to support and acknowledge the Navy’s sacrifices and contributions to national security and development. He urged the public to disregard these allegations and to stand behind the Navy’s efforts to safeguard the maritime domain.
Furthermore, Chief Agbese called on the media to uphold responsible and factual reportage, abstaining from sensationalism and misinformation that could undermine the morale and confidence of the Navy and other security agencies.
In conclusion, he assured ongoing oversight to ensure that the Navy and other security agencies receive adequate funding and equipment to execute their duties effectively, while emphasizing the House of Representatives’ commitment to monitoring the situation closely.
