The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has taken a significant stride in advancing translational research within the health sector by inaugurating the National Health Research Committee. This momentous occasion took place with the swearing-in of a 13-member committee at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research in Lagos.
At the inauguration, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, outlined the administration’s vision for health research, emphasizing a commitment to excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. The newly formed National Health Research Committee is positioned as a vanguard that will foster collaboration across diverse health disciplines and institutions in the country.
Dr. Alausa stated, “The establishment of this committee marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey towards a healthier and more resilient Nigeria. Our vision for health research encompasses a holistic approach that integrates scientific excellence, technological innovation, community engagement, and global collaboration to improve the health of every Nigerian. We envision a nation where cutting-edge research becomes the cornerstone of our healthcare system, and we aim to harness the power of knowledge to address the unique challenges that our diverse population faces.”
Central to the government’s vision for health research are pillars such as innovation and technology, disease surveillance, an early warning system, equity and access, translational research and implementation science, community-centric research, capacity building, and collaboration. The minister commended the members of the NHRC for embracing the responsibility that will propel the nation to the forefront of health research.
Prof. Olufunmilayo Olopade, the appointed Chairman of the NHRC, expressed gratitude for the trust and confidence placed in her. She highlighted the monumental role that health research will play in achieving sustainable development, not only for Nigeria but also for other nations looking to Nigeria for leadership in this crucial domain.
During the event, Prof. Babatunde Salako, the Director-General of NIMR, praised the minister’s selection of experts who have made substantial contributions to national and global health research. He emphasized the global recognition of the committee members and reiterated the minister’s commitment to advancing health research to new frontiers.
The committee is composed of distinguished individuals, including Prof. Bala Sanni, Prof. Babatunde Salako, Prof. Zarki Abubakar, Prof. Nosiru Shaibu, Dr. Obi Adigwe, Prof. Mayowa Owolabi, Prof. Christian Happi, Prof. Stephen Abah, and Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar.
