The upcoming bye-election for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District has garnered attention as the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares to choose a candidate to fill the vacant seat. The resignation of Senator Dave Umahi, who assumed the role of Minister of Works, has prompted the need for a replacement.
A committee dispatched from the APC’s National Secretariat has completed the screening of Professor Anthony Okorie Ani as the party’s potential flagbearer in the February 3, 2023, poll. Notably, two individuals, Princess Ann Agom-Eze and Prof. Ani, obtained forms for the primary election.
Smart Iheazor, the Chairman of the screening/special congress committee, revealed that only Prof. Ani completed and returned the form, participating in the screening process. In contrast, Agom-Eze failed to return her form or attend the screening session, despite extensive radio and media announcements.
“I am the Chairman of the screening/special congress committee of Ebonyi State bye-election for the Ebonyi South senatorial seat,” stated Iheazor. “On Thursday, we came into Abakaliki and immediately commenced our assignment. Out of the two aspirants, only one person returned the completed forms.”
Furthermore, Iheazor highlighted, “The second person that purchased the form but did not return it to the party head office is one Princess Ann Agom-Eze. She didn’t show up for the screening, neither did she return the form she purchased from the party.”
As the APC progresses with its candidate selection process, the absence of Agom-Eze during the critical screening phase has raised speculation and underscored the party’s determination to establish a formidable presence in the upcoming election. The outcome of the primary election will undoubtedly shape the political landscape of Ebonyi South Senatorial District, as the chosen candidate will vie for a position of significant influence.
