Farmers Return to Fields as Niger State Ramps Up Agricultural Production

Niger State Governor, Mr. Umar Bago, has revealed a resurgence of interest among farmers in returning to their fields. He noted a significant number of farmers have already resumed agricultural activities within the state.

The governor disclosed his commitment to spearhead the ambitious 500,000-hectare agricultural production initiative, as announced by President Bola Tinubu in his recent New Year’s address.

Following a meeting with President Tinubu in Abuja, Governor Bago expressed Niger State’s pioneering role in advancing the president’s food security agenda, with the implementation of 250,000 hectares of dry season farming already underway.

“We’ve already sealed agreements with several companies for off-take and I briefed the president on our progress in the agricultural sector,” Governor Bago stated during his visit.

In line with the president’s New Year’s address, which emphasized agriculture and outlined plans to cultivate 500,000 hectares in 2024, Governor Bago affirmed Niger State’s commitment to act as a pilot for the project. He also expressed ambition to align with the federal government by matching the proposed 500,000 hectares.

The governor conveyed the president’s optimism about the initiative, highlighting the president’s satisfaction with the state’s proactive measures in the agricultural sector.
