Zimbabwe: Redwing Mine Tragedy Prompts Government to Halt Operations as Rescue Efforts Intensify

The Zimbabwean government has taken decisive action in response to a tragic incident at Redwing Mine in Penhalonga. A shaft collapse, suspected to have been caused by earth tremors, has resulted in the entrapment of approximately 15 artisanal miners. Rescue operations are currently underway, albeit initially hampered by unstable ground conditions.

Acting Local Government Minister, July Moyo, issued a statement mandating the immediate cessation of mining activities at the site. In the statement, he reassured the nation and the families of the miners, emphasizing the commitment to continuing the search and rescue efforts over the forthcoming days. Moyo also dispelled rumors circulating on social media platforms, clarifying that the trapped miners are employees of Metallon Gold.

In coordination with the ongoing rescue operations, the Minister of Mines and Mining Development has instructed Metallon Gold to suspend all activities at Redwing Mine. Moyo urged all miners to heed President E.D. Mnangagwa’s call for responsible mining practices, emphasizing the need to prevent such accidents and protect precious lives.

The Redwing Mine disaster is the most recent in a series of mining incidents, including the Bayhorse mine collapse in Chegutu last year. The allure of potential wealth amid economic hardship has attracted informal miners to Redwing, where they eke out a living under challenging conditions.

Redwing Mine, owned by Zanu PF Member of Parliament, Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya, has activated the emergency response system in collaboration with the government. Minister Moyo confirmed the immediate mobilization of Civil Protection structures to oversee the search and rescue operations. The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has assembled a team of experts, involving representatives from Metallon Gold and Freda Rebecca Gold Mine of Bindura.

The government’s swift and comprehensive response to this unfortunate accident underscores the gravity of the situation. As the nation watches and hopes for a successful rescue, the focus remains on supporting the affected families and preventing future tragedies through responsible mining practices.
