Traditional rulers from three autonomous communities in Osah Ibeku, Umuahia North LGA, Abia State, have issued a stern warning against the use of illegal drugs and weapons during the upcoming Igba Ekpe festival. The monarchs, representing Osah, Ohabiri Umuchime na Amanso, and Eziama na Mgbaja autonomous communities, have emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and security in their lands.
With a joint message signed by Eze Joshua Akomas of Osah, Eze Abel Iheanyichukwu (Ochima 1) of Ohabiri Umuchime na Amanso autonomous community, and Eze Chiabuotu Emelike of Eziama na Mgbaja autonomous community, the traditional rulers have made it clear that the use of hard drugs such as Indian Hemp and Mkpurumiri will not be tolerated during the festival. Additionally, the brandishing of weapons, including machetes, guns, and bottled drinks, has also been prohibited. Offenders will face consequences, including a fine of fifty thousand naira.
The monarchs stressed the need for peaceful conduct during the festival, urging both indigenes and guests to enjoy the Ekpe festival in a harmonious manner. They highlighted the importance of preserving the peaceful environment that the communities have been enjoying and warned against any activities that could disrupt this tranquility.
This proactive stance taken by the traditional rulers aligns with wider efforts in Abia State to ensure crime-free environments, particularly during festive periods. Governor Alex Otti, in a recent new year broadcast, reiterated his warning to traditional rulers and community leaders, emphasizing their role in preventing criminal activities within their domains. He made it clear that harboring criminals would not be tolerated, indicating a zero-tolerance approach to crime in the region.
