The Nigeria eSports Federation has proudly announced that it will play host to the 2024 eSports World Cup, drawing in participants from 42 African nations in March. This unprecedented event reflects the growing prominence of eSports on the African continent.
In an exclusive interview with Chairman Agbor Ayuk in Calabar on Monday, he unveiled that the federation secured the hosting rights in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA), and as an esteemed member of the Confederation of Africa eSports.
Ayuk emphasized the evolving landscape of eSports, highlighting its transformation from a recreational activity to a thriving commercial industry. With a staggering three billion gamers worldwide, Nigeria is fervently advocating for widespread awareness and involvement in eSports, aiming to cement its presence on the global stage.
Remarkably, 25 states, including Cross River, have already established their respective associations affiliated with the Nigeria eSports Federation, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm and support for eSports across the nation.
Despite the evident progress, Ayuk acknowledged prevailing obstacles, notably the lack of parental comprehension regarding eSports, which inadvertently leads to discouragement among aspiring participants. He promptly dispelled misconceptions by asserting that students engaged in eSports exhibit exceptional scholastic performance, attributing this to the game’s intensive cognitive demands.
The Nigeria eSports Federation’s ambitious endeavors not only propel the nation into the vanguard of eSports but also strive to harmonize traditional values with contemporary opportunities, ultimately fostering a dynamic and inclusive gaming culture.
