Seun Kuti, a well-known Afrobeat artist, has sparked controversy with his bold statement that no pastor in Nigeria has ever performed a miracle. He made this remark in response to a BBC documentary that exposed alleged misdeeds by the late Nigerian pastor TB Joshua, founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
The documentary unveiled disturbing accounts of abuse, harassment, rape, manipulation, orchestrated miracles, and the clandestine lifestyle of TB Joshua. After viewing the documentary, Seun Kuti took to Instagram to express his strong opinions. He criticized Nigerian pastors for faking miracles and using the church to conceal their unethical behaviors. In a video, he boldly asserted, “No Nigerian pastor has ever performed a real miracle. They are all faking it. All the General Overseer Pastors are guilty of the same offenses BBC has accused TB Joshua of. Now the new Word for ‘rape’ is ‘TBJ.'”
This outspoken reaction from Seun Kuti has added fuel to the already contentious issue surrounding TB Joshua’s legacy. The late pastor passed away in June 2021 at the age of 57. His death has not extinguished the controversy, as the BBC documentary continues to generate intense debate and scrutiny.
Seun Kuti’s forthright comments and the revelations in the BBC documentary have thrust the spotlight onto the practices of Nigerian pastors and the credibility of their purported miracles. The ensuing discussions are likely to reverberate across religious and social circles, prompting a reassessment of the influence and accountability of spiritual leaders in Nigeria and beyond.
