Renowned Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti, has fervently voiced his opposition to the proposition of legalising firearm ownership within Nigeria. The Grammy-nominated Afrobeat sensation unequivocally asserts that Nigeria is far from ready for such a drastic move, expressing concerns that allowing civilians access to arms would exacerbate societal inequalities and security risks.

During a candid Instagram live session with his followers, Kuti emphatically conveyed his stance, arguing that the potential repercussions of legalising arms would disproportionately impact the less privileged. He contended, “I don’t believe our society is ripe for us to say we want to put guns in anybody’s hands. First of all, it just means that rich children would be killing poor children all over the place. That’s what would happen.”

In a compelling display of social consciousness, Kuti underscored the potential for the wealthy to exploit their advantage, further marginalizing the underprivileged through the lethal use of firearms. His impassioned commentary articulated the grim prospect of an unequal society descending into wanton violence facilitated by unrestricted access to weapons.

Furthermore, Kuti openly critiqued the motivations underlying the push for arms legalisation, asserting that the primary impetus lies not in safeguarding citizens, but rather in profiteering from the arms trade. He boldly posited, “The politicians are talking about arms legalisation because they want to make money from the trade not because they care about your protection.”

In lieu of arming the populace, Kuti advocated for a focus on comprehensive security measures led by the government. He reasoned that if genuine protection of the populace were the true priority, authorities should concentrate on bolstering law enforcement and security personnel, rather than arming civilians.

Seun Kuti’s impassioned plea against the proposed legalisation of arms in Nigeria resonates as a compelling critique of societal disparities and the potential perils inherent in such a momentous policy shift. His unequivocal denouncement stands as a resolute call for upholding the collective security and equity of the Nigerian populace.
