The newly-appointed chairman of Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu-Aliyu (SAN), has declared his intention to personally lead the prosecution against individuals charged with corruption. This bold statement came during his inaugural media interaction in Abuja, signaling a significant shift in the commission’s approach to combating corruption.
Dr. Aliyu, expressing his commitment to lead by example, emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the fight against corruption. He unveiled plans to appear in court during the prosecution of individuals indicted by the ICPC. This move, he believes, will set a precedent and underscore the commission’s unwavering determination to tackle corruption at all levels.
“In the area of prosecution, by the grace of God, I intend to be appearing in cases instituted by the ICPC. As the chairman of the commission, whenever we have cases that I feel I need to take the lead in prosecution, I will do so. This is to ensure that we discharge our mandate, which is to prosecute persons charged with corruption by the ICPC,” Dr. Aliyu affirmed.
While highlighting his distinctive approach, he acknowledged the importance of assigning some cases to senior lawyers within the commission for prosecution. This measure aims to reinforce the commission’s commitment to ensuring that justice is not only served but also seen to be served.
In addition to his prosecutorial stance, Dr. Aliyu outlined his strategic focus on enhancing the technological capabilities of the ICPC. He emphasized the imperative of digitizing the commission’s operations to improve efficiency and efficacy in combating corruption. His vision encompasses leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative approaches to bolster the ICPC’s operational framework.
The ICPC chairman underscored the pivotal role of the media as partners in the relentless fight against corruption, urging them to amplify public awareness and contribute to holding power accountable. He articulated a collective vision of building a Nigeria where integrity shapes the future, fostering a society where corruption is not just confronted but ultimately defeated.
Dr. Musa Adamu-Aliyu (SAN)’s resolute determination marks a significant turning point in the crusade against corruption in Nigeria, heralding a new era of accountability and transparency in the country’s governance and public service sectors.
