The upcoming gubernatorial race in Edo state has garnered significant attention, particularly following recent developments within the Labour Party. Of particular interest is the entry of Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, into the race for the gubernatorial ticket under the platform of the Labour Party, LP.
Akpata’s candidacy has sparked discussions, with a notable emphasis on the balance between the desire for a candidate of Esan extraction and the call for competence, capacity, and character. His distinguished service as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association has positioned him as a formidable aspirant within the Labour Party.
Unlike many politicians who view their party as a mere vehicle for personal ambition, Akpata has taken a different approach. He has expressed a commitment to building the Labour Party in Edo state, urging other aspirants to do the same. This deviation from traditional political norms marks a novel approach to politics in the state.
Akpata’s engagement has been extensive, including visits to all 18 local governments of the state to meet with party executives at the state, local government, and ward levels. During these interactions, he identified key issues and took proactive steps to address them.
Recognizing the importance of human capacity development within the party, Akpata donated a significant sum for training in the Edo South senatorial district and challenged the party to organize similar workshops in other senatorial districts. He also addressed the issue of mobility, acknowledging its impact on campaign efforts, and subsequently donated vehicles to enhance the mobility of party members.
Akpata’s unprecedented actions have included multiple tours of the state and substantial donations, such as providing Toyota Sienna Minivans and a new Toyota Hiace 2023 model bus to support party mobilization efforts. Additionally, he pledged further resources, including branded chairs and public address systems, to strengthen the party’s infrastructure at various levels.
The significance of Akpata’s investment in the Labour Party cannot be overlooked, particularly in the context of an upcoming gubernatorial election where the party faces formidable opponents. As the incumbent People Democratic Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress vie for power, the Labour Party’s resilience and unity position it as a key player in the upcoming elections.
However, the party’s choice of a gubernatorial candidate remains crucial. It must align with the values of commitment, understanding of the state’s challenges, relatability, and a proven track record of success. As the deadline for this decision approaches, the Labour Party’s decision will significantly impact the political landscape leading up to the gubernatorial elections in September 2024.
