Supreme Court to Issue Verdict in Kano Gubernatorial Dispute, Sparks Widespread Anxiety

The much-anticipated judgment in the Kano State gubernatorial dispute is set to be delivered by the Supreme Court on Friday, January 12. This verdict stems from an appeal lodged by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, challenging the ruling of the Court of Appeal.

The series of events leading to this pivotal moment began with the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s ousting of Yusuf, who had been elected under the banner of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Subsequently, the tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 2019 election.

Governor Yusuf, discontented with the ruling, pursued the matter at the Appeal Court. The court not only upheld his removal but also underscored that the governor was not a member of NNPP at the time of the election.

Opting to bring the case to a conclusive end, the governor and his party sought recourse at the apex court by filing an appeal against the previous decisions. Barrister Bashir Tudun Wuzirci, the secretary of the legal team for the NNPP, confirmed that the Supreme Court had scheduled the ruling for Friday. Notably, the court emphasized a limitation of two counsels per party due to the issuance of seven judgments on the same day.

The looming judgment has ignited apprehension and mounting speculation across the state, with political observers and citizens closely monitoring the outcome amid its potential implications for the political landscape of Kano.

As the countdown begins towards the pivotal ruling, all eyes are on the Supreme Court, with stakeholders bracing for the consequential pronouncement that could significantly reshape the political landscape of Kano State.
