Hellen Obiri Set to Defend Boston Marathon Title Against Strongest Field Yet

Nairobi – The stage is set for an epic showdown as Hellen Obiri, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, gears up to defend her title at the 2024 Boston Marathon on April 15. The announcement of the marathon’s lineup has sent ripples of excitement as it is touted to be the most competitive in the event’s history.

Obiri, who clinched last year’s victory with a personal best time of 2:21:38, expressed her eagerness to return, stating, “I am excited to return to the 2024 Boston Marathon to try to defend my title. Boston is a historic race, and I would like to add my name further to its history.”

The Kenyan contingent promises a fierce challenge to Obiri, with the likes of Judith Korir, 2022 World Athletics Championships Marathon silver medalist, and veteran Boston Marathon winner Edna Kiplagat, among others, vying for the top honors.

Adding to the anticipation, Ethiopia will be well represented, featuring the return of 2019 champion Worknesh Degefa and the debut of 2:17:36 marathoner Tadu Teshome. With World championships medalist Senbere Teferi and seasoned marathoner Ababel Yeshaneh also in the mix, the Ethiopian runners are poised to give Obiri a run for her money.

The international flavor of the marathon is further enriched by the presence of top-tier talent from various corners of the world. Helah Kiprop, a silver medalist at the 2015 World Athletics Championships, and the Kenyan duo of Vibian Chepkirui and Grace Kahura, alongside Ethiopia’s Hiwot Gebremaryam, will undoubtedly elevate the competition.

The 2024 Boston Marathon is shaping up to be a spectacle of athleticism and determination, showcasing the crème de la crème of long-distance running. As the global spotlight turns to this iconic event, anticipation and excitement continue to build, setting the stage for an unforgettable display of talent, perseverance, and spirit.
