The Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, headed by Justice Florence Doruoha-Igwe (Rtd), has taken a decisive step in the investigation of government property and funds with a dramatic turn of events. The panel has issued bench warrants for the arrest of Anthony Agbazuere, the former Chief of Staff, and Don Ubani, the former Deputy Chief of Staff, both of whom served under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

The action was prompted by Agbazuere’s alleged failure to appear before the panel to provide evidence regarding a Toyota Hilux Land Cruiser purportedly in his possession since leaving office. Justice Duruoha-Igwe has directed Agbazuere’s arrest and production for further cross-examination, adjourning the matter to January 24, 2024.

Similarly, the former Deputy Chief of Staff, Don Ubani, faces a bench warrant due to his alleged non-appearance before the panel and his failure to respond to a notice served on him on November 30, 2023. Justice Doruoha-Igwe issued the order for Ubani’s arrest and production on January 24, 2024, for his defense.

In response, Don Ubani expressed shock at the news of the bench warrant, denying ever receiving an invitation from the panel. He labeled the arrest order as “false propaganda and political witch-hunt” while committing to appear before the Panel of Inquiry if duly invited.

The panel’s bold move signifies a significant development in the ongoing probe, raising questions about the transparency and accountability of former government officials. As the saga unfolds, all eyes are set on the impending court dates and the revelations they may bring to light.
