Egyptian midfielder Ahmed ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan is determined to lead the Pharaohs to an unprecedented eighth Africa Cup of Nations title at the upcoming 2023 tournament. Egypt, the most successful team in the competition’s history with seven titles, is gearing up for a formidable campaign.
Trezeguet expressed the team’s ambitious goal, emphasizing the challenging nature of their journey. “It is a difficult group. It is not easy. All the African teams are strong and have very good players. We will play all the matches as finals and see what they look like. We came here aiming for a new title. Since our arrival, the entire team has only one goal, to be crowned champions,” the former Aston Villa player conveyed to CAFonline.
Reflecting on Egypt’s recent AFCON disappointments, Trezeguet acknowledged the pain of losing the finals in 2017 and 2021 to Cameroon and Senegal, respectively. “It is really difficult to lose two finals. It is painful but we will try again to get the title. We must have what we deserve, and we hope that this time luck will be on our side and that God will help us,” he added, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination.
With their AFCON campaign looming, Egypt is set to begin their journey against Mozambique on Sunday, 14 January, followed by clashes against Ghana and Cape Verde. The Pharaohs are ready to battle for redemption and glory, with Trezeguet spearheading their fervent pursuit of victory.
