In the third quarter of 2023, Nigeria experienced a substantial increase in active voice and internet subscribers, as revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics in its latest report titled ‘Telecoms Data: Active Voice and Internet per State, Porting and Tariff Information (Q3 2023).’ The report unveiled compelling insights into the country’s telecommunications landscape.

The data highlighted a remarkable growth in active voice subscribers, soaring to 221,769,883 from 212,201,578 in Q3 2022, reflecting a hefty 4.51% surge. Moreover, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, this figure exhibited a noteworthy increase of 0.76%.

Similarly, the report indicated a noteworthy uptick in the total number of active internet subscribers, reaching 160,171,125 in Q3 2023, compared to 152,784,980 reported in the same period in 2022, signifying a substantial 4.83% rise. Quarter-on-quarter analysis also revealed a solid growth of 0.42%.

Delving into the state profile analysis, Lagos State emerged as the frontrunner in active voice subscribers, boasting an impressive 27,043,333 subscribers, followed by Ogun with 13,136,247 and Kano with 12,192,122. On the contrary, Bayelsa recorded the lowest number of active voice subscribers at 1,558,509, closely trailed by Gombe and Yobe with 2,643,899 and 2,760,261 respectively.

Furthermore, Lagos State also dominated the landscape in terms of active internet subscribers, exhibiting a commanding 19,188,745 subscribers, trailed by Ogun with 9,538,622 and Kano with 8,712,782. Conversely, Bayelsa reported the lowest number of active internet subscribers at 1,195,580, with Zamfara and Gombe following closely at 1,863,686 and 1,909,498 respectively.

The report also shed light on the mobile network operators’ landscape, with MTN emerging as the leading contender in terms of subscriptions in Q3 2023. This latest data underscores the evolving telecommunications sector in Nigeria, portraying a burgeoning landscape of connectivity and digital engagement across the country.
