The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, has hailed the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming the election of Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State, as a beacon of hope for the state’s people. In an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Olayoku expressed gratitude for the judgment, which he believes validates NNPP’s victory in the March 18, 2023, election.
Olayoku urged politicians to embrace fair electoral practices and to desist from manipulative tactics. He emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy, stressing, “The party is just appealing to politicians to try to win elections through the ballot boxes and not through the back door. I think the Supreme Court has deflated that, and we want the other arms of judiciary to also stand up to the truth.”
As the Deputy National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Olayoku underscored that the verdict was anticipated, as NNPP’s triumph in the election was widely recognized. He pointed out that the party’s success in the presidential election, as well as in the senatorial and House of Assembly races, signified a clear mandate from the people of Kano State.
Highlighting NNPP’s electoral achievements, Olayoku stated, “In the governorship elections, we defeated APC with about 200,000 votes, in the House of Assembly of 40 seats, we have 26. So what will be the yardstick for them to win governorship? We thank God that the Supreme Court has restored the hope of the people.”
The Supreme Court’s decision has not only brought resolution to the gubernatorial contest but has also reinforced faith in the democratic process, providing assurance to the people of Kano State.
