President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is contemplating the creation of dedicated security forces for Nigeria’s solid mineral and marine economic domains, as revealed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
During a meeting with All Progressives Congress governors in Abuja, President Tinubu articulated his intention to overhaul Nigeria’s security framework by introducing three new police formations in addition to the regular police. He emphasized the need for forest guards equipped with advanced training, modern technology, and weapons to bolster security measures. Furthermore, he underscored the imperative of deploying special police units to safeguard the solid mineral and marine economic sectors.
President Tinubu elucidated, “We have a significant marine economy, and I see no reason why we should not have a marine police. We will have a similar setup for the solid minerals to deter illegal mining activities. I am committed to investing in security.”
Expanding on his strategy, Tinubu also disclosed his proposal to build up the nation’s mineral reserves, particularly gold, as a means of bolstering foreign exchange reserves.
The prospect of establishing specialized police units for the solid mineral and marine sectors, combined with the plan to fortify mineral reserves, showcases Tinubu’s comprehensive approach to addressing security challenges and enhancing Nigeria’s economic prospects.
