Naira Plummets Against US Dollar in Forex Market

The Naira has experienced a significant depreciation against the US Dollar in the foreign exchange market, marking a consecutive decline.

According to data from FMDQ, the Naira’s value plummeted to N931.23 per US dollar on Wednesday, down from N878.57 per dollar on Tuesday. This reflects a loss of N52.72 or a 6% decrease in the local currency compared to the previous day’s rate.

Simultaneously, at the parallel forex market, the Naira fell to N1320 per dollar, indicating a 3.03% decrease from the previous day’s closing rate.

This latest development unfolds against the backdrop of a warning by the Central Bank of Nigeria to foreign exchange defaulters. The CBN, through its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Ali, announced on Wednesday that the bank had cleared the entire forex backlog of 14 banks and injected approximately $2 billion across sectors.

The sharp decline of the Naira against the US Dollar has raised concerns and could have wide-ranging implications for various sectors of the Nigerian economy. As the situation continues to evolve, stakeholders are keen to observe how the authorities will address and mitigate the effects of this downward trend.
