In a significant crackdown on illicit drug activities, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Plateau Command has announced the seizure of a staggering three tons (3,122.730 kg) of illicit drugs, valued at N100 million, in the Plateau region.

Unveiling this remarkable feat, Umar Yahuza, the Commander of NDLEA in Plateau, revealed in an exclusive interview with Media Talk Africa that a substantial 70% of the confiscated illicit drugs comprised marijuana, along with other abused substances such as tramadol, pentazocine, diazepam, and cocaine.

Furthermore, Mr. Yahuza highlighted that the NDLEA apprehended a total of 1,155 suspects in 2023, encompassing 1,076 males and 79 females. Impressively, the command secured 96 convictions in court, underscoring their commitment to upholding justice and combating drug-related offenses.

In addition to these enforcement efforts, the command also engaged in brief counseling sessions for some drug addicts. Moreover, through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) program, the NDLEA conducted extensive awareness campaigns in 97 public locations across the state, including schools, marketplaces, religious centers, and transportation hubs, to disseminate crucial information about the perils of drug abuse and trafficking.

Expressing concern over the escalating rates of substance abuse among the youth, Mr. Yahuza emphasized the prevalent use of vehicles and motorbikes by drug peddlers for transporting banned substances. He urged parents and guardians to take an active role in advising and guiding their wards on the detrimental consequences of drug abuse and trafficking.

This groundbreaking operation marks a pivotal victory in the battle against illicit drug trade, underscoring the unwavering dedication of the NDLEA in safeguarding communities and eradicating drug-related criminal activities in Plateau. With this resolute stance, the agency continues to fortify the pillars of security and public welfare, sending a resounding message that the illicit drug trade will not go unchallenged.

This exemplary initiative not only underscores the NDLEA’s proactive stance in preserving societal well-being but also highlights the imperative for global collaboration in combating the pervasive threat of illicit drugs.

By championing these vital efforts, the NDLEA sets a compelling precedent for upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the future of communities against the scourge of illicit drugs.

The NDLEA’s resolute action stands as a beacon of hope, bolstering the resolve of law enforcement agencies worldwide and heralding a renewed commitment to fortifying the collective defense against the global narcotics trade.
