The combined efforts of the Nigerian military, police, and other security agencies have led to the successful rescue of 9 individuals who were kidnapped in Benue. In a collaborative operation known as Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), troops, along with law enforcement, conducted a daring rescue operation in the dense Owukpa forest within the Ogbadibo Local Government Area.
Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of OPWS, confirmed the operation’s success during a press briefing in Makurdi. The rescue mission, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in the liberation of 8 females and 1 male who had been held captive since their abduction. The hostages were initially taken after the kidnapping of passengers traveling on a commercial bus along the Otukpo – Enugu Road on January 11.
During the operation, a firefight ensued, prompting the kidnappers to flee their hideout, leaving their victims behind. The quick and decisive action of the troops forced the perpetrators to abandon the individuals they had unlawfully detained. Moreover, the authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle and 10 mobile phones at the scene, further thwarting the criminals’ plans.
After the rescue, the victims received immediate medical attention at the Sector Headquarters for essential care before being allowed to continue to their respective destinations following a debriefing process. Meanwhile, the two suspects apprehended and all confiscated items were handed over to the police for further investigation and legal action.
Major General Igbinomwanhia expressed gratitude to the local residents for their valuable assistance in uncovering the criminals’ hideout and facilitating the successful rescue operation. He also urged the inhabitants of neighboring states, specifically Nasarawa and Taraba, to utilize the emergency contact numbers provided by the authorities to report any suspicious criminal activities, ensuring swift and resolute actions against such threats.
The concerted efforts of the security forces have not only thwarted the criminal activities in the region but have also demonstrated the unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of the citizens. This successful rescue mission stands as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the Nigerian military and law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s populace.
