Abia Police Commissioner Makes Amends After Unprofessional Conduct at ABN Station

Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr Kenechukwu Onwuemelie took a bold step by visiting the premises of All Breaking News (ABN) on Azikiwe Road, Umuahia, following an unfortunate incident involving his officers. The commissioner, accompanied by senior police officials, extended a formal apology for the unprofessional conduct of his officers during the raid of the ABN station’s live studio to effect an arrest.

In a press release issued by the Abia Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, it was revealed that preliminary investigations into the incident exposed the unprofessional behavior of the officers involved. The statement emphasized that while there is no law prohibiting police officers from making an arrest in a studio, the circumstances surrounding the specific case did not warrant such actions.

During the assessment visit to ABN TV/Radio on 17/1/24, the Commissioner engaged in constructive discussions with the Director of ABN TV/Radio, ultimately leading to an amicable resolution. The Commissioner acknowledged the fault of the officers and expressed regret for their conduct. He assured the public that an orderly room trial for the officers commenced on 18/1/2023, with a firm commitment to disciplining them if found guilty.

The press release emphasized the Abia State Police Command’s dedication to upholding a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law compliant, and people-friendly Police Force. This commitment aligns with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Ebetokun, PhD NPM, reflecting a genuine effort to maintain public trust and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
