In a bold move, the Kogi State Government has imposed a ban on the issuance of consent letters to miners, signaling a significant shift in its approach to the mining sector. The decision was revealed by the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashiru Gegu, during a briefing with journalists in Lokoja. The communique followed a pivotal meeting between the government and key stakeholders in the mining industry.

Gegu underscored the government’s stance, emphasizing that community development agreements related to mining activities must undergo thorough vetting by the Kogi State Government before any mining operations can commence within the state. He sternly warned that any mining company contravening this directive would face immediate sanctions, reaffirming the administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law.

“The Kogi State Government is resolute in its determination to restore order in the mining sector across the state. The current administration remains steadfast in its resolve to hold to account any individual or group involved in fraudulent activities within the mining domain in Kogi State,” stated Gegu.

Furthermore, the commissioner reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering a climate of integrity within the state’s mining activities. He assured that the government’s efforts are geared towards safeguarding the lives of residents residing in close proximity to mining sites. In a bid to solidify this commitment, Gegu stressed that only authorized miners engaged in lawful mining activities, in collaboration with local communities, would receive protection and be permitted to reap the benefits stemming from mining operations in their vicinity.
