Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent figure in the Yoruba sociocultural group, Afenifere, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging him not to mirror his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s approach to handling insecurity in Nigeria.
During a condolence visit to the Jos residence of late Chief Solomon Lar, a former Governor of Plateau State and first National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adebanjo emphasized the urgent need for tangible actions against the recent wave of attacks in the state. The attacks, carried out by terrorists on Christmas Eve, resulted in the tragic loss of approximately 150 lives and left several others injured across communities in Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
Adebanjo underscored the necessity for Tinubu to take proactive measures, including the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings, in order to effectively tackle the prevailing security challenges. He expressed discontent with the mere issuance of marching orders, a strategy employed by Buhari during his tenure, which failed to yield meaningful results or bring perpetrators to justice.
Drawing parallels to the previous administration, Adebanjo highlighted the futility of giving directives without subsequent concrete actions and stressed the imperative for a more resolute and decisive approach from the current leadership. He conveyed that the Nigerian populace expects a president who is not content with superficial gestures but is committed to pursuing and holding the orchestrators of violence to account.
In unequivocal terms, Adebanjo conveyed Afenifere’s unequivocal stance that President Tinubu must demonstrate a determined resolve to confront and address the prevailing security crisis by ensuring that those perpetrating atrocities are apprehended and subjected to due legal processes. The underlying message resonated a clear exhortation for substantive and efficacious measures, rather than mere symbolic gestures or proclamations.
The seasoned Afenifere leader’s directive encapsulated the fervent appeal for resolute action, resonating with a broader call for genuine accountability and tangible outcomes in the face of escalating security concerns. It reverberated as a potent plea for proactive and unwavering leadership, capable of instigating palpable change and fostering a climate of safety and justice for all Nigerians.
