Nigerian football icon, Austin Okocha, has shared his thoughts on the Super Eagles’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Okocha, present at the Stade Olympique Ouattara, lauded the performance of Jose Peseiro’s men and expressed his admiration for their resilience against the home team.

The winning goal came from a penalty converted by captain William Troost-Ekong, earning Nigeria a crucial three points in Group A.

In an interview with France 24, Okocha emphasized the significance of the result, stating, “It was an important victory for us. It puts us in a very good position.”

Reflecting on the challenges of playing against the host team, Okocha added, “It is never easy to play against the host, but we showed a lot of character today and deservingly we won the game.”

Acknowledging the pressure faced by the Ivorian team, Okocha observed, “Côte d’Ivoire love their football. They just don’t want to win; they want to win in style, which puts the players under a lot of pressure.”

The Super Eagles’ victory has positioned them favorably for the knockout stage, marking a significant milestone in their AFCON campaign.
