The Nigeria Customs Service’s Katsina Area Command has announced a remarkable achievement, generating over N1.132 billion in revenue during the 2023 fiscal year. Despite daunting challenges posed by banditry and the closure of borders with Niger Republic, the command’s Controller, Mohammed Umar, revealed this exceptional feat while honoring 30 newly promoted officers.
Mr. Umar expressed that the revenue fell short of the N1.304 billion target set for the command, reaching approximately 87.8%. He emphasized the command’s unwavering commitment to compliance with the border closure directive, leading to the interception of 369 contraband items, including used vehicles, tires, second-hand clothing, vegetable oil, and foreign parboiled rice.
Furthermore, the command made significant strides in bolstering collaboration with various security agencies for intelligence gathering, enhancing operations both within and beyond the border corridors. This approach, coupled with a harmonious working relationship with the state government, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and border communities, has laid a strong foundation for advancing trade without compromising national security.
Acknowledging the crucial support received, Mr. Umar attributed this achievement to the steadfast backing from the Comptroller General of Customs, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, the management team, officers, and other service units. Addressing the newly promoted officers, he urged them to uphold their commitment to the constitutional mandate of revenue generation, legitimate trade facilitation, and the curbing of smuggling activities, underscoring the significance of upholding the honor of their uniform.
This remarkable performance by the Katsina Area Command not only underscores its resilience in surmounting adversities but also exemplifies the unwavering dedication of Nigerian Customs officers to safeguarding national economic interests and security.
