Minister Tours UCH, Assures Support After Ibadan Explosion

In the wake of the devastating explosion that rocked Ibadan, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, visited the University College Hospital (UCH) to offer his empathetic support to the victims. The explosion, which tragically claimed the lives of five individuals and left 77 others injured, caused significant damage in the residential area of Bodija, adjacent to UCH.

During his visit, the minister, accompanied by senior officials from UCH, including Chief Medical Director Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, expressed his heartfelt concern for the victims and their families. Dr. Alausa, acting as an emissary of President Bola Tinubu, conveyed the president’s empathy and commitment to enhancing healthcare services. His poignant words and visible empathy emphasized the government’s dedication to improving healthcare delivery and providing relief to those affected by the tragic event.

The minister’s tour included an assessment of the impact on the hospital and its structures. He reassured UCH of the government’s support in repairing the damaged facilities, ensuring the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Additionally, Dr. Alausa praised UCH for the comprehensive care provided to the victims, lauding the hospital’s efforts in addressing the aftermath of the explosion.

Prof. Otegbayo, while acknowledging the ongoing repairs initiated prior to the minister’s visit, expressed gratitude for the government’s swift response and pledged to continue the restoration efforts. He also highlighted the commendable progress in the patients’ recovery and confirmed the Oyo State government’s coverage of their medical expenses, underscoring a collaborative approach to alleviate the burden on the affected individuals.

The aftermath of the explosion has prompted investigations into its cause, with the state government examining the possibility of explosives being stored in the Bodija residential area by illegal miners. The impact of the explosion reverberated as far as 15 km from its epicenter, affecting not only residential buildings but also several structures at the state government secretariat and UCH, including the medical museum, main theatre, clinics, School of Nursing hostel, and patient facilities.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, the visit of the minister and the collaborative efforts between the government and UCH serve as a beacon of hope and solidarity in the face of adversity. The display of empathy, swift action, and commitment to restoration reflects the resilience and resolve of the community, offering solace to those affected and reinforcing the collective efforts to rebuild and heal.
